OU Now Pulling for Tech!

Texas Tech is trailing Baylor 28-14 in the third quarter, having been unable to stop the Bears. Freshman quarterback Robert Griffin has had an excellent game and poses a real threat to the Red Raiders. I have no doubt that a bunch of folks at Oklahoma are pulling for Tech to make the comeback, because if the Raiders drop out of the three way tie for the division lead, OU would fail to make the championship game because of their loss to UT in October.

No Gambling For Me!

When I was a freshman in college I learned to play poker, I had never played a hand until then, but I discovered I liked it. Too much. So I quit gambling altogether. I do not even buy a raffle ticket from a Little Leaguer. Consequently, I have never seen any of those wondrous hotels las vegas has to offer. I just don’t want to put myself in that environment.

Texas Wins, Is It Enough?

The University of Texas Longhorns defeated their arch rivals, the Aggies from Texas A & M, by a 49-9 score! It was the largest margin of victory in more than a hundred years. But it may not have been enough to keep the Horns in front of OU for the place in the BCS championship game, despite the fact that the Horns beat the Sooners by ten points in October!

Rivalry Weekend

This weekend is Rivalry Week in NCAA football, the weekend when most of the natural and cross state rivals play their annual grudge games. The intensity of these games is always fun to watch and upsets are to be expected. It would be a good weekend to have home theater seating in front of my wide screen HDTV and take in all the action!

Tebow Again?

The Heisman Trophy vote this year should be interesting. At one time or another Colt McCoy, Graham Harrell and Sam Bradford seemed to have the best shot at replacing Tim Tebow as the winner. But as the season has progressed, each of the three from the Big 12 have knocked each has had a loss that puts them in a three way tie for the league lead and probably opens the door for Tebow to repeat!

The insurance companies are among the ones I hear from most often. Missing Rings

My mother in law has declined in health to the place that she needs someone to be with her all the time. She did not want to go into a home, so she decided to use a home nursing agency. She was happy with the girl they sent out and things began all right. But sometime a few weeks later Marcie’s diamond rings were missing. She was very upset and eventually called the police. A detective searched the local pawnshops and was able to recover the jewelry. And the home care nurse is headed to jail!

I have been a resident of the Houston area for most of my sixty years. I have always had a warm spot in my heart for both the University of Houston and Rice. This weekend the two schools will play for a chance to host the conference championship game, far more than the usual stakes for these two schools! I hope to take my grandsons to see the game!

Giving Thanks for the Common!

Next week our nation will celebrate Thanksgiving. I was reflecting with my wife last night about the things we have to be thankful for but wich we usually take for granted. Both she and I grew up in families of six with one bathroom. Today we have two bathrooms and one of them has two vanities that allow our boys to get ready at the same time. We decided that bathroom faucets are indeed something for which to be thankful!

Not So Hot Stove!

The Hot Stove League is in full throttle in some places right now, New York, Anaheim, Chicago and Los Angeles. But there is not warmth in the stove in Houston! The Astros are apparently going to try desparately to sign Randy Wolf and Doug Brocail! As a season ticket holder, I am less than inspired by that news!

DIY Projects

Do you enjoy do it yourself projects around the house? I am not a very handy kind of a guy, but sometimes I take on projects that I think I can handle. One of the most recent honey do items my wife asked me to do was to change the faucet in the kitchen. She had picked out one of the new Kohler faucets with an antique bronze finish. Fortunately I was able to make the change on the very first try!

Tech Over OU?

This weekend pits the Red Raiders of Texas Tech against the Sooners of Oklahoma University in a key game to determine the Big 12 representative in the BCS Championship game. A win by Tech would assure them of a place in the Big 12 Championship game against Missouri. A loss will leave three teams with one loss and will put the computers in charge of choosing a representative!

Though I think it is a tall order, GO Tech!

Unhealthy Meal Once a Month!

I attended a luncheon today in the county seat of the neighboring county. A bunch of us get together once a month for encouragement and camaraderie. And I always order a chicken fried steak that is smothered in cream gravy and served with French fries and buttered toast! I always looked forward to that meal, but even more so now that my wife has introduced healthy cooking to our dinner table almost every night!

Not Running Anymore

For more than a year I ran with my grandsons two or three times a week. I got tot the point I ran in a 10 kilometer run last Christmas. It was a good habit and I planned to continue. But since school started I have not run even once. There are lots of reasons, but I have started putting on some unwanted weight again. I guess I need to list Santa’s best diet pills for my Christmas list this year!

Titans For ReaL?

The Tennessee Titans are winning not only a lot of football games, they are winning a lot of believers in their chances to be in the Super Bowl this year. Many thought they were only a good defensive team. Some thought that the first time they got down by 14 points they would unravel. But yesterday they fell behind the Jacksonville Jaguars, but kicked it into high gear and came from behind! They are now 10 and 0!
