I am old enough to remember the day when if you used the word cable, you were in for bad news, because a telegram had come. Then if I could not get my car to start and asked my my friend if he had cables he would not ask me if I meant HDMI or fiber of patch cables. He would have just gone out to his car and gotten jumper cables out of the trunk.

Unknown Astros!

I have been keeping up with the Houston Astros for 46 years. This morning I was reading about the Elite Training camp they will conduct this week with their top minor league prospects, along with a few from the major league squad who need some work.

This camp is going to introduce a lot of new names and faces to the team. There are even three from the 40-man roster of shom I have never heard: Samuel Gervacio, Brad James, and Wesley Wright. All of them are pitchers. Nolan Ryan will lead camp for them.

If the team is going to do well this year, there are going to have to be some surprises within the starting rotation. I am hoping some of these no names will turn out to be somebodies very soon.

Making Christmas Money Stretch

My grandson is now a high school basketball player. he plays guard on the freshman team. At Christmas time he received some money he wants to use for athletic clothing and equipment. I suggested that his money would go farther if he would take advantage of Sports Authority coupons when he makes his purchases. He has thanked me over and over!

Thanks to The Pop Up Blocker Man

Whoever came up with the concept of a popup blocker for our computers should be awarded a medal. I remember the time when you could hardly click your way to a new web page without being bombarded with pop up ads. It was very frustrating, much like getting a call from a phone solicitor when you just sat down to supper!

I am sure the one who came up with the innovation is receiving rewards for his work!

Time

Just before Christmas my seventeen year old Pulsar watch took a blow and had the crystal broken. I took it to the clock shop and found it would only cost thirty five dollars to have it replaced. I was without a watch for the first time in a long time and I felt undressed. I gave thought to getting myself one of the beautiful gold watches at the shop, but I decided It was not TIME to get a new watch!

They Make It Look Easy!

I have been able to attend a few rounds of PGA tournament golf over the years. It those guys make it look so easy to hit a golf ball so straight and so far. And their ability to recover from a bad lie is awe inspiring. It makes me wonder why when I pick up my Nike golf clubs I do not get the same results. I wonder if it could have anything to do with the fact that I only play a time or tow a year.

Animals Belong Outdoors

I am one of those who loves animals, but I do not favor them inside my home. We have a big yellow lab we rescued after Katrina. He lives happily in our back yard, where the boys play with him every day. he has a nice house in which to take refuge from the weather. Living in town, I do not have a cat, as they will not stay confined in a back yard. If I owned a farm I would have a cat or tow and put a cat bed in the corn crib, where he could catch mice trying to eat my grain!

Diamond Rings

Did you ever meet a lady who was not fascinated by diamond rings? Most of the women I know love them and could never have enough of them. I do not know whether it is the beauty or the value of the rings that captivate them, may a bit of both. But my wife is an exception to that generality. She wears her wedding band, and it has diamonds, but she seldom wears more jewelry than that.

Changing Insurers

I received a notice in the mail from the insurance company that covers my cars that I can save a substantial amount on my auto insurance if I allow them to provide my home owner's insurance as well. My home owner's policy is expiring at the end of this month, so I think I will call my auto insurance agent today and see if there really is a good reason to make a change in my coverage and provider. It make sense to call, and I hope it make more than cents to change!

Military Relacations

One of the young ladies from our congregation was home for the holidays, from the base in Anchorage, Alaska where her husband's unit is based. When he returns from Iraq in June, they will be transferred to another base. I had not thought much about how hard military relocation can be on the spouse and family of the service man. She is handling it fine, but she is concerned.
