Cute Players Are Another Reason My Girls Are Astros Fans!

Most of my Astros stories to this point have been about my oldest daughter. But I am sitting here watching the Mets lead the Astros late in a game that has playoff implications for the Astros. It reminded me of the days in 1985, 86 and 87. The Mets and Astros had some very important clashes in those days, including one of the most awesome playoff games in history. It lasted 16 innings, but the Astros lost, and the Mets went on to win the World Series, over the Boston Red Sox.

In those days, the Astros had a young left handed relief pithcer named Jeff Calhoun. My middle daughter thought he was very cute, and he was single. Over the course of a couple of seasons, she met him a few times. And once to her delight, she received a written response to a letter she had written him.

Toward the end of a season, and after school had started, there was some big social activity going on at the high school, probably a homecoming. My daughter wanted Jeff Calhoun to be her escort. So she wrote him and described the activity, and invited him to attend.

A few days later she received a note letting her know that he was honored, but that as soon as the season was over, he would be leaving Houston to get married. Ironically, his fiancée and my daughter have the same name!

A few years ago, I learned that Calhoun was living in the Houston area. I found out because he was giving private instruction to the son of my closest friend. The boy is a lefty!
