We found out last March that my husband matched in the Mile High city for his residency. We were really excited. He got into the program that he wanted and we both had never lived out West. We had visited and gone skiing before but were excited to set up shop there. We looked and looked for the perfect house. We finally find a great house in Denver that was close to the hospital where he would be working. The house has more of a modern look and feel, but was built really “green”. Our electricity and gas bills are actually much lower than they were when we lived in Georgia. I decided to call Denver Home Security
and get an alarm system for the house, just because my husband works sometimes at night and it makes me feel safer. I love our new little home, after all, it is the first house that we have ever bought together. We haven’t had to do too much to spruce it up, and I think that it is absolutely perfect!

There are a lot of things I have learned to do to take care of my family. I am a natural caregiver, but when I became a wife and mother, I became a caregiver on steroids. I look for anyway I can to make sure my family is safe. Benjamin Franklin said it best, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” I am following that advice to the extreme. Today I planted some thorny rose bushes. I feel sorry for anyone that tries to go between them. My husband has also decided to be proactive. He left his old target gun outside and we have started leaving dog collars and leashes around the outside of the house. We even checked out AtlantaHomeSecurity.com and found a system that offers everything we need. The kids have even gotten into the act. They report to me every new person they see walking by the house. If they do not recognize the person’s face, I have to come to the door or window and check them out. It feels good taking a proactive approach.

On The Simpsons season 4 The Itchy & Scratchy Movie episode stands out as one of the best episodes in the history of The Simpsons. The episode starts off with a parent teacher conference. Bart's teacher explains that he is never throughly punished and instead of being a justice in the supreme court Marge imagines him turning into a male exotic dancer.

While the parents are out Bart destroys his grandfather's false teeth and is sent to bed without dinner, but Homer feeds him anyway. Later on Bart is left in charge of Maggie, but he does not watch her and she steals a car and crashes into the prison freeing several prisoners.

As a punishment Homer says that Bart is not going to be aloud to watch The Itchy & Scratchy Movie ever. It is reviewed as one of the best movies ever and even Lisa agrees. Bart ends up never getting to see the movie as it eventually leaves theaters. The end of the episode shows Homer and Bart 40 years later going to see the movie. It is shown that Bart is a justice in the supreme court.

This was one of the first episodes that showed a scene from the future that became common in several later episodes, such as the one about Lisa's Wedding. The Simpsons can be seen on many networks in syndication on

I’ve worked in construction since I was sixteen years old and my current job as a project supervisor is by far the toughest I’ve ever had in this industry. The guys all look to me to make the final decisions, and sometimes my choice can cost the company thousands of dollars if I’m not careful. Piano Lessons

Getting kids ready for school involves taking piano lessons in my household. During winter break, my kids always participate in a winter recital. This recital involves hours of piano practice, which I think gives the kids good mental stimulation for the second semester of school. I like that their minds are not lazy over winter break, but rather, are in use in a very creative way.

I love to take my kids out when they have their annual piano recital. Before we leave, I make sure to turn on the HOME SECURITY SYSTEMS . My cousin, David, is 62 and recently suffered a very serious stroke. He is making recovery, and is going through rehab right now. As he lives in Austin and I live south of Houston, I have not seen him since his stroke, but have been in contact with him to express my concern and offer my best wishes

One of the concerns I expressed to Dave's wife is that they get their estate in order. They need to discuss whether or not they want me traditional will or a living trust. NBA Basket Ball-2010/11

The NBA season has gotten started with some interesting developments. The Houston Rockets, I thought, would be better than last year, because Yao Ming is back. But his limited minutes on the court have left them very beatable. So far, the only team they have beaten is the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Everyone thought the Miami Heat would bury every other team in the Eastern Conference, but the Boston Celtics look like they may be at least as good. And every one is waiting for Lebron James to make his return appearance to play against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the city he has forsaken!

I am officially now on the band wagon for the TCU Horned Frogs to be in the BCS National Championship Game! THey played the number 5 team, Utah, in Salt Lake City and won by 40 points! Then LSU put the second loss on Alabama. Now I am watching Texas A&M whip the Oklahoma Sooners, which would eliminate OU from consideration for the big game. So if Auburn or Oregon losses--and I expect Alabama to beat Auburn--Then TCU would be the team to beat!

Over the years I've gotten all kinds of experience with fantasy hockey because me and my friends are quite frankly obsessed with totally dominating in it. We take it pretty seriously and I don't think that it's just because we put a little money into a pool for it either. I actually spend more time reading up on hockey most times of the year instead of reading about news.

I was online studying up on my hockey for the fantasy league the other day when I saw a web site advertising a new wireless internet connection and after reading it I decided to get some more info" about it.

But you always have to be on your toes when it comes to fantasy hockey" because the game and its players are literally always changing. I can't even tell you how many times that I've thought that a certain player will perform really well because they've had a good record, for them to have a terrible performance streak or get hurt, which happens to occur a lot in the sport of hockey.

Sometimes it's really hard to get all of our schedules lined up so we can have some family time. I'm sure it doesn't help that I have to travel a lot for my job. But I really do try to make an effort for us to spend a lot of family time together whenever possible. One of the things that I have planned is a trip for us to go to the state fair together this weekend.

It isn't that far of a drive away, just about an hour, but I thought that I'd book a hotel room with our clear bundle
so that we can have even more fun and it will even be like a short little vacation for all of us.

I think that it's a miracle itself that we were able to find a Saturday that none of the kids had a soccer or basketball game and I'm not away on a business trip. I know that the kids are really excited about riding rides. But me and my wife are the most excited about all that bad for you food that they have at the fair.

I caught the premiere of NBC's new Thursday night TV show, "Outsourced" on September 23rd on www.bestchoicetv.com/satellite-tv/tx/ satellite TV from. I was not disappointed. Set in a Mumbai, India, "Outsourced" follows the shenanigans of an American call center which has been outsourced to India for fiscal reasons. Not at all uncommon, but it presents another set of difficulties when the products you're selling are American novelties that require some knowledge of American culture to completely grasp.

Starring Ben Rappaport as Todd Dempsy, the show follows this lone American salesman leaving the mid-west to manage a call center in India. He meets an interesting set of characters in Manmeet (Sacha Dhawan), Gupta (Parvesh Cheena), Rajiv Gidwaniand (Rizwan Manji), Madhuri (Anisha Nagarajan) and Asha (Rebecca Hazlewood). Assistant manager Rajiv is clearly after Todd's position, Gupta won't shut up, Manmeet is more interested in the ladies, Madhuri whispers everything and Asha obviously wants him. To top it all off, none of them understand the novelties. Green Bay, Wisconsin's trademark "cheesehead" is a completely foreign concept as is fake vomit, whoopee cushions and the like. Todd must explain American popular culture to his employees as he comes to try to understand Indian culture. My favorite parts included Todd's joy in the name "Manmeet" and when another call center manager, Charlie Davies, played by Diedrich Bader, warns Todd that he'll get the runs for 5 days if he eats the spice filled Indian food.

RESCUE!!!!

As I was sitting in front of the television late in the night watching the rescue efforts that were taking place in Chile, I began to think, "There must be a sermon in all this!" I even began to jot down ideas that came to me as I saw the pictures and witnessed the drama.

It had been 69 days since the miners were trapped in a pit more than 2000 feet below the surface of the earth. There was not a thing they could do to save themselves. And for the first 17days they had no way of knowing all the things that were going on above to affect their rescue. Then contact was made and it was revealed that there was a massive effort underway to bring about their salvation. It was going take time, and there would be an incredible cost.

And when the time was right, someone had to go down into the underworld to make sure the miners were instructed and equipped for the process they would have to undergo to in order to realize the rescue that was available. Each man would have to take the steps if he wanted to ascend to the joyous reunions they wanted deeply. I doubt that there were many of the miners that gave serious thought to rejecting the rescue capsule or the protection necessary to obtain release from their entombment, even though it surely was narrow. There was no other way!

Who doesn't like to act a little child-like every once in a while? It is sometimes a nice time to relax for me around Halloween. This is the time of year when I don't mind to take a trip back to my childhood and watch some of my favorite Halloween kid's movies from that time. One of my all time favorites is the Charlie Brown Halloween special.

This child's program has been coming on during Halloween since the 60's and yet it still is a classic to this day. It is the classic story of wanting to believe something is real so badly. Linus (one of the characters) is determined to prove to Charlie Brown and the rest of the gang that the legend of the Great Pumpkin is real. Thus he finds it necessary to stay up all night and watch for the Pumpkin to appear.

While watching this program on my satellite tv from Directv Chesterton I can just take a trip down memory lane and remember some of the best days of my childhood. If you are not out with your own kids doing the trick or treating this year, then I highly recommend that you stay home and tune in to watch this movie. It is likely that you too will remember some fond memories of the first time you ever watched it on television. Sit back and enjoy.

Going to the gym on Tuesday is a day for heavy lifting. On Tuesday the gym is filled with heavy lifters from neighboring cities. This is the best time to show-off your best skills, and share information such as the locations on upcoming competitions, or phone numbers for new spotters, and coaches. Normally the air conditioning is on because of the heavy lifting creates a steam room filled with hot bodies.

We begin our day with stretching for at least an hour before going to the gym. Failing to stretch before a workout is like asking for an injury. Stretching the muscles n the arms, shoulders, and legs. Warm-up can also be done in advance of going to the gym. The muscle in the body must be fully awakened by the time we get to the gym. Completing the warm-up stretching, reps of crunches, and push-ups is adequate.

The next step is completing all the final checks before actually going to the gym. Checking the gym bag for all the necessary hygiene products, calling the spotters, and coaches to verify last minute connections. Reviewing the air temperature will ultimately determine the workout apparel. The best apparel for all occasions is a pair of sweat pants, and a thermal top. Upon leaving the house, I set the Home Alarm Systems prior to going to the gym.

New Vantage Point!!!

I have been an Houston baseball fan for a long time. I first watched professional baseball in Buff Stadium, where the Cardinal farm team played through the 1950's. In the early '60's I watched from the grandstands in Colt Stadium. When the Astrodome opened in 1965, I moved indoors with them. I most often sat in the pavilion seats in centerfield, though on several occasions I was in SRO (standing room only).

For the last ten or so years of the Astros tenure in the Dome, I was able to buy a mini-season ticket. That enabled us to sit in the same seat for 27 games a season. My seats were in the Loge (purple) level.

In 2000 the Astros moved to Enron Field, now named Minute Maid Park. That year a group of six of us bought a pair of full season tickets, on the fourth level. Over the 11 seasons in Minute Maid, we have moved till we reached our current seating, fourth level front row, directly behind home plate.

I have seen almost all the important games the Astros have played, all the All Star games, the Jeff Kent homer against the Cardinals, the extra inning loss in game 6 of the 86 playoffs, Mike Scott's no hitter to clinch the pennant in 86, playoffs in each of the series in the 80's and 90's, the first World Series game!

There have been occasions when someone would give me seats in the expensive sections of the various stadia. I have sat in field boxes five rows behind the Astros dugout. I have sat in the Sky Box owned by Gulf Oil. But tonight will be the first time I have sat in the luxury box at field level right behind home plate. It is the section where the owner, Drayton McLane sits. It is the section where President Bush and his wife Barbara sit.

I will try to behave myself in a dignified manner. And I will try not to boo Carlos Lee!

Happ For Oswalt--Same Pattern?

Last night's game between the Astros and the Washington Nationals reminded me of games earlier this season and last season. The Astros new left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ cruised through six innings and left with three to nothing lead. In the seventh inning the Nationals scored one run, but in the eighth they scored seven and got the win.

So Mr. Happ got a no decision last night, despite pitching well. I thought of all those times early this season and in 2009 when Roy Oswalt, for whom Houston acquired Happ, left the game with a lead only to receive a no decision. I hope this does not become a pattern for Happ the way it did for Oswalt.

What a performance by J.A. Happ last night at Minute Maid Park. The young left-hander, recently acquired in the trade for Roy Oswalt, pitched a two hit shutout against the dreaded divisional rival from St. Louis. In the complete game effort he walked only one batter. There were two double plays executed by the Astros, so Happ only faced 28 batters on the evening, one over the minimum.

I really loved to watch Roy Oswalt pitch when he was here, but I was an Astro fan long before he came and will be one long after he has gone.

Gold Coins

With the economy being so bad for so long, and everything still being so unstable economically, I have been trying to find ways to ensure my investments against loss. One of the most sure investments over the years has been gold. So recently I have been doing some reading about the precious metal, and the best ways to own it.

I had supposed that for an individual to own gold that he would need to buy gold coins. I had thought that holding bullion would be improbable because I thought of bullion being in the form of large gold bars. But I have found out that bullion can be in small ingots that are more convenient and easier to handle. I didn't know until recently that there are even gold coins without value as currency that are simply considered ingots in coin form.

Another revelation for me was that an investment in gold does not require that I keep the gold in my own hands. Some institutions, such as United States Gold Bureau, offer storage in independent banks or depositories that are safe.

I have not yet decided the form in which to make an investment gold, but I surely like the idea of enjoying the beauty of gold coins, as well as their value.

Ruffles Ranch Dip

My brother in law one night told me that he had a snack I had to try out. I was sure it was nothing special that I had not tried. He was eating Tostitos chips with Ruffles ranch dip. I thought I would give it a try while I was there. The dip is amazing. I had never seen it before this time. I went to the store to try and find some right away. Once I got it, we sat down to watch some satellite tv in Charlotte and enjoy our new found love for this dip. It was amazing. I loved having it. I know it is probably not very healthy, but hey I did eat it with carrots the other day. It is thicker than ranch dressing. It just has a flavor that you cannot find anywhere else. It is the best ranch dip I have ever tried. I will continue to eat this until I can't find it at the store anymore. I hope that I don't have this problem ever. If they ever come out with another dip that is from Ruffles, I will try it for sure since it is from them.

Survivor Has Proven It Can Survive

When Survivor began, no one had really ever seen a show quite like it before. I remember when it came out I was watching ER, which was only a season or two old and George Clooney was still on it. I think I was still watching Melrose Place at the time, too. Anyway, who had ever heard of a show like Survivor? I don't think that direct tv offers in Illinois were even available yet but now that is what I watch it on. It is interesting to think back to how the contestants behaved back then compared to how they act now. It is obvious that they all have watched past seasons but it never ceases to amaze me when one person keeps making the same mistakes over and over. Will they never learn? Sometimes I think their ego is just large enough to fool them into thinking that if they try the same old behavior, they are good enough at playing the game that they will get away with it, even though it fails time and time again.

Preparing For Vacation--Guest Post

Some of my friends think I go a little overboard when I prepare for my vacation. The first thing I do is prepare a list of the final things to do. This includes making certain the air conditioner is turned off; the lights are all turned off; the electrical items, such as TV's, are unplugged, and, the most important of all - making certain my monitored alarm is set and ready to go.

I always notify my closest neighbors about my vacation plans letting them know the day we will leave as well as the day we plan to return. Neighbors are great about keeping an eye on my home. I always tell them to call the authorities if they see anything strange going on.

I also have a relative who stops by daily to pick up the mail. If someone sees mail piling up it is a certain give away that no one is home. Another give away is the newspaper . It is important to have the daily delivery stopped until the family returns home. Newspaper after newspaper piling up on the front lawn is another indication that no one is home.

Since our family has automatic timers inside the house I also set different lights to go on and off at given hours. This might not scare away an intruder but it will most likely make them think twice before they try to break in.

Tools For Father's Day

My husband and I just purchased a new home that we want to do some work on, so I though tools would be fitting for Father's Day. I knew just where to go, so I used my hughes net internet service to get online and go to Sears. He always told me that he purchased tools from Sears and liked Craftsman. I figured power tools would be a good start for Father's Day.

I found a package that had a circular saw, a reciprocating saw, a drill and a bag for it all. It also came with the batteries and was all portable. I purchased this big package with a lot of small accessories. I made sure that I got him a tool box, tool belt and many wrenches and screw drivers.

My husband is very hands-on but has spent all of his time with me focusing on his career so we could purchase a home. I assumed that getting him set up for home repairs and remodel jobs would be something that he liked very much. He is the type of person that loves to spend time on the weekends working on projects and building things. The very first thing that he wanted to do is put additional shelving in the closets. This will help him start all of those little jobs that will make the house we bought our home.

A Forgetable Memorial Day!

I really don't like complainers, especially when it is me complaining. But there was lots to complain about or visit to Minute Maid Park this afternoon. First, the advertised holiday version of the Astros caps that were to be given away as promos were not provided. Not even the little American flags that we have received at games on Memorial Day were handed out this year. Can you say, "cost-cutting?"

Then when we got to the kids play area, that the Astros promote in an effort to attract families to the games, most of the activities were not open. We were told that they did not have enough staff to man all them. We had heard that the last three times we had taken to boys to a game, but those were on week nights/school nights. Today was a holiday and there should have been max staff on the job. More budget trimming?

Then the home plate umpire, Bill Hohn, decided he was the center of attention. He had, from our seats right behind the plate, squeezed the strike zone on Astros' pitcher Roy Oswalt. In the third inning Oswalt threw what both he and I thought was strike three to Adam Dunn. Hohn called it a ball, and on the next pitch, Dunn hit a bases loaded double, driving in three runs.

The next batter, Josh Willingham, had a 1-2 count. The next pitch was a fantastic pitch--I saw the replay when I got home and was right about my original opinion--but Hohn called it ball 2. Oswalt turned toward right field and raised his head and shouted. I don't know what word he said, but he was not shouting at the umpire, just expressing frustration.

But Hohn came out from behind the plate and walked toward the mound. He called Roy to attention, and Roy responded by pointing to the umpire. Hohn promptly ejected Oswalt. From there the pitching unraveled and the game got really ugly. The final score was 14-4. Most of the fans had left the building before the last out.

To add to the insanity, twice during the game, idiotic fans jumped the rails and ran across the diamond. Each time security captured the fan and led them away, one in hand cuffs. They will each pay a thousand dollar fine and spend the night in jail. Some fans find the trespassers amusing, but I am not one of those. I enjoy a baseball game, not jerks, whether they are behind the plate or trespassing on the field.

A thoroughly forgettable Memorial Day!

Trading Roy???

Roy Oswalt has requested a trade. I hate the idea of him not being here. He is the best pitcher the Astros have developed in their history, with the possible exception of Larry Dierker. It has been a real joy to watch him perform.

But the Astros are at least a couple of seasons away from real contention for the playoffs, so perhaps trading Oswalt could expedite the return to respectability. That being true, I do not want to see Roy in another National League uniform. I do not want the 'Stros to have to face him on a regular basis.

So when I heard that Nolan Ryan had called to express interest to Drayton McLane about trading for Oswalt, I began to daydream about what Houston might get from the Rangers in the trade. How would it be if one of the components of the trade were Elvis Andrus or Nelson Cruz? Remembering Robin Roberts

May 31 1957 was a magical night for a young baseball fan from South Texas. My family was visiting my mother's family in Bordentown, New Jersey for a couple of weeks. My dad and my uncle took me to Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia to see my first Major League game in person.

The Phillies' pitcher that night was the awesome right-hander Robin Roberts. He was in the midst of 6 consecutive seasons of 20 wins. And he was facing the Brooklyn Dodger with their awesome line-up, Gilliam, Cimoli, Snider, Furillo, Hodges, Campanella, Neal, Zimmer, and the Don Drysdale as the opposing pitcher.

The game lived up to my imagination. There was excellent pitching and defense. There was a majestic by the great Dodger catcher, Roy Campanella, off the top of the stadium. But Roberts only gave up three hits, pitched a complete game and got the win. For years after that magical night I would want to be a second baseman like Junior Gilliam. And, in my mind, I would pitch, copying Robin Roberts and throwing the perfect pitch in the pressure situation.

Robin Roberts passed away yesterday. But the memory of his mastery will live as long as I do!

Johnny Neun Quote!

I just read a quote by a man who was in his late eighties and still swinging his fungo in spring training at the time. Johnny Neun had played in the 1920's for Ty Cobb and managed the Yankees and Reds. Young players today would do well to listen.

"It is important to remember how careful you have to be about the way you live your life. It's to your advantage not to do too many things off the field that interfere with your life on the field. You turn on the TV and you hear that some committee or other is investigating things out of someone's past and lives get ruined. When you play this game, you're in the public eye. Dig in and make sure you get the full benefit of your natural ability. Only a few of you are going to make the Big Club. But for the others, you ought to be able to leave saying. "I gave it my best." Don't worry about tomorrow. Don't worry about things you have no control over. Do it this way and someone may walk up to you and say, 'you're the one."

Perfect Night at Minute Maid

Being at a ball game anytime is a great joy, but Tuesday night at Minute Maid was almost as perfect as one could ever expect. The April temperature was about 70 at game time, and not a cloud in the sky. The roof was open and the breeze was blowing gently.

To make things better, we saw the return of Lance Berkman to the line up for the first time, following his time on the disabled list. He was one for four with a double and two runs batted in, giving hope that the offense will be improving in the days ahead. Even Carlos Lee had a hit, also a double, sparking hope that his slump will end soon. J.R. Towles had a couple of hits! Things are looking better.

After giving up hits to the first four Florida hitters, Brett Myers pitched tough enough to keep the Astros in the game. Matt Lindstrom came in and closed out the come from behind win over the Marlins.

It would be hard to find a better day at the ballpark!

Opening Day At Minute Maid '10!!!

Opening Day has been a huge part of life for my wife and I. We have celebrated 43 anniversaries, 42 of them at Opening Day for the Astros. The only time we missed was when we celebrated our 35th in New York City. We just returned from the 2010 edition.

Roy Oswalt started for the 'Stros against Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants, the reigning back to back Cy Young winner. Oswalt pitched creditably, but not well enough to avoid the loss. He gave up three runs in his six innings of work, while Lincecum did not allow a run in his seven innings of work.

Houston did not hit the ball hard very often tonight. Carlos Lee had a line drive off the wall in left, but the next well struck ball was in the 9th inning when J. R. Towles had a double to left center field to drive in the second run of the evening for Houston.

There were not too many bright spots for the over 43,000 in attendance. I wonder how many fans will be in the stands tomorrow.

Farewell, Mike Cuellar

When I was reading the sports section of the paper this morning I was saddened to read of the passing of Mike Cuellar. He died of stomach cancer at the age of 72. Seeing his name again reminded me of what a great pitcher Cuellar was, and that he was part of the worst trade in the history of the Astros.

Cuellar came to the Astros in 1965, as the team was moving into the Astrodome and became know as the Astros, after their first three seasons as the Colt .45’s. Mike was a left handed pitcher with a truly wicked screwball. I loved to sit in the bleachers in center field next to the tunnel when he pitched, just to watch the ball dance! Cuellar was a 16 game winner for one of the most woeful teams in the league, in those days after the MLB expansion that brought them into the National League.

I the winter of 1968 the Astros traded Mike Cuellar to the Baltimore Orioles for a first baseman named Curt Blefry. I was outraged at the time. And time only confirmed that the trade was worse than any in team history, worse that Joe Morgan going to the Reds, worse than Kenny Lofton for Eddie Taubensee, the absolute worst! By 1970 Blefry proved to be so worthless that he was traded for a washed up Joe Pepitone!

Cuellar went on to help take the Orioles to three World Series appearances and to be a part of a staff that had four 20 game winners in one season. If Mike had been with the Orioles his whole career he would be in the Hall of Fame.

This week over on Facebook there is a movement to have everyone find the song that was Billboard number one on the day of their birth. I did my search and found that the #1 R&B song on the date of my birth was "I Can't Go on Without You" — Bull Moose Jackson and His Buffalo Bearcats (8 weeks). But the overall #1 that day was The Woody Woodpecker Song by Kay Kyser, introduced in a cartoon. It went on to be nominated for an Academy Award!

One day while preparing to close our donut shop for the day, my oldest daughter told me she wanted to send a thank you to Jimmy Wynn for the autographed baseball he had given her. She was only four years old and we wanted to nurture in her a spirit of gratitude, so I told her I would write down what she wanted to say, and we would mail it on the way home. I don’t remember the exact words of the note, but she thanked him for the ball and for calling her beautiful. She told him if he ever came to our little town he should come to our shop and she would give him a free donut.

We did not know the actual address, so we just sent the note to Jimmy Wynn, Astrodome, Houston, Texas. I had my doubts it would ever reach the Astros’ star, but I did not tell my little girl. We dropped it in the mailbox on the way home that night.

A few weeks later we went to another game at the Dome. As was usual for us, after the game we went to the loading docks gate, which is where the home team players exited the building. We were waiting at the base of a long ramp, maybe fifteen or twenty yards from those crowding around the door. I saw a boy from the summer league team I coached among the gathering; he was working hard for autographs. He greeted us and asked what we were doing so far back from the action. I told him we were waiting for Jimmy Wynn, so my girl could say hello to her friend. Phil had his doubts that Jimmy Wynn was her friend, and he went back to the door to obtain more signatures.

A little while later Jimmy came through the door. He had a box under one arm and a couple of bats in his other hand. He was walking fast and obviously was not interested in signing a bunch of autographs that night. Phil was trailing him all the way down the ramp, trying to get him to stop, without any luck. As he approached, my daughter called out, “hi Jimmy.”

Wynn walked directly to where I was holding my little one, switching the bats to his other hand so he had an arm free. He said, “Good Evening, Stacey, I received your card. Thank you very much.” He took her from me, kissed her on the lips and proceeded to visit with her about what kind of donut he should get if he came to the shop.

Is Arbitration In Store for Wandy?

THe Houston Astros have three players that remain arbitration eligible; Hunter Pence, Tim Byrdak, and Wandy Rodriguez. The exchanged figures are not too far apart for Pence and Byrdak and the club. But there is a significant hurdle between what Rodriguez wants and the team is offering, a two million dollar hurdle.

Wandy had his best season year, winning 14 with one of the best ERA's in the league in 2008. I think he is on the verge of being a consistent winner and being left handed, hi is very valuable. I don't really care if he makes $5 million or $7 million. My concern is that Wandy has been the most easily distracted and emotional pitcher on the staff for most of his career. I hope that he does not have to go to an arbitration hearing and listen to his weaknesses presented by the team, who is trying to save a few (relatively speaking) dollars.

Here's hoping that a settlement is reached before the hearings start.

One Month To Go!

It is getting closer to baseball season, I can feel it. Every day now there is some baseball related story in the newspaper. Two of the Astros arbitration eligible players signed contracts yesterday--Jeff Keppinger and Chris Sampson. In a month the players will be in training camp and we will see pictures on the evening news of the workouts and then Grapefruit League games. I know the football playoffs are going on right now, but for me that is just a diversion till baseball gets back underway!

'Stros Added Myers!

I was away from home and the media for the first week of the new year, so I was a bit late in hearing that the Houston Astros had made a deal with right handed pitcher Brett Myers. It was a surprised because I did not think the Astros would spend the money for a free agent.

I am pleased that the move was made because I think Myers has a chance to really improve the starting staff this year. And of course that makes there be a chance to have a better season. Myers will likely be the third pitcher in the rotation, behind Roy Oswalt and Wandy Rodriguez. That is a lot better than Mike Hampton or Russ Ortiz.

I am feeling a bit of optimism.!

Playing For the Championship

I have not played fantasy football, until this season. I signed up for a free league through ESPN.com and created my team--the League City Wildcats! In the middle of the season I had a four game losing streak, but wound up on a 9 game winning streak and in first place in my division at the end of the "regular" season. Now I am in the playoffs.

I was victorious in the first round, and am now playing for the championship of our league! Having the team in the fantasy league made watching games other than the hometown boys much more fun. But now I want to WIN!

Jacuzzi Tub

Sometimes a few days of getaway end up making a bigger difference in your life than expected. Sometimes you experience something that you want to incorporate into your “normal” life. One such thing for my wife and I was Jacuzzi bathrooms uk. A condo we rented had one, now we want one in our home!

We really enjoyed relaxing in Jacuzzi tub at the end of a day. It really helped unwind the kinks in our legs and backs after cycling or hiking. Each of us thinks it would be nice to come home from a day in the rat race and spend time in a nice warm Jacuzzi whirlpool. Now we just have to find the money to cover those Jacuzzi prices!

Penn State Is VB Champ--Again

My junior high age granddaughter plays and loves volleyball. Tonight was the finals of the NCAA volleyball championships between the University of Texas and Penn State. We watched on espnU. The Longhorns won the first two games against the #1 ranked Nittany Lions. In 37 matches this season, the Lions had only lost 5 games total. So they were being challenged by UT in ways they had not all year long. But the Lions rallied to win the next three games and thus their third straight national title. It was nail-biting entertainment!

No Arbitration for Miggy

I am not surprised that the Houston Astros have decided not to offer Miguel Tejada salary arbitration. He would surely win at least $12 million and they do not want to pay him that much next season.

That said, I hope they will be aggressive in negotiations for his services, he has been a positive influence on the team for the two seasons he has been in Houston. His joy at playing the game and his deep desire to win is needed on a team that features Carlos Lee and, to some degree, Lance Berkman, who are both pretty "laid back."

Plus if Miggy is willing to move to third, the Astros could get a better defensive shortstop and become a better team right away.

When I went to my doctor recently, he told me I needed to become more active in order to have better control of my blood pressure. He said he was not so much concerned about my diet as he was about my inactivity. My job is very sedentary, so I have to make a conscious decision to get enough exercise.

When I began jogging again, I realized that my running shoes were in pretty bad shape. If I'm going to be committed to running, I need to make sure I have shoes that will protect my feet and back. I decided to go online to see if I could find a place to order shoes without having to get out and go shopping. I found is Zappos.com

I have had pretty good luck with the Nike
brand, though the brand really doesn't make a difference to me if the shoes are not of the right quality at the right price. So I have no more excuses, I have to get back on the track.

My 39th Year Recollections

The year I was 39 turned out to be the last of nine years in one location as youth minister, though at the time I turned 39 I had no idea that I was going to be making a move, and certainly not to the pulpit. I had been successful and happy in my ministry is expected to continue in that place for considerable time to come. I did not have any aspirations to preach.

But our preacher had left for greener pastures, and in addition to my youth ministry duties, I preached twice a week for 13 months, which covered a good portion of my 39th year. When the elders had found our new preacher, and told me the date that he would be arriving, I had a realization that I was not through saying all that I thought needed to be said. It was my first inclination that I wanted to preach.

A few months later, while it summer camp with our teens, I was approached by one of the elders at the congregation at which I now preach. He wanted me to consider coming to work with them. I was intrigued, but scared as well. I was not at all sure I had what I believed it would take to carry out a long-term preaching ministry. Through the "courting process" it became clear that I was the kind of man that the elders here were seeking. When they made the official offer, I told them the only doubt I had was that, "I am not sure that I want to work for a group of men that would hire me to preach."

Between the time I accepted the offer and actually made them live, I had had my 40th birthday.

Getting High Definittion!!!!!!!

For a long time I would not even look at a High Definition television. The reason is that I knew I would like it and I could not afford to buy a High Dollar toy.

My downfall came when my favorite neighbor invited me in to see the World Series on his new set. I was sold; it was like seeing TV for the first time. He had a 42 inch LCD TV, and I was jealous.

I now own a 39 inch screen, LCD in my family room. Of course, I had to also add a Home Theater system, so that I can get the full effect of sound to go with the fabulous picture!

Wandy Was Wonderful!

It is always fun to go to the ball park, whether or not your team is doing as well as you might want. But it is lots more fun when your team plays well. Last night the Astros played well as a team and Wandy Rodriguez was wonderful.

Playing the World Champion Phillies and facing Cliff Lee may could have presented a much bigger problem, but the 'Stros got nine hits in the four innings that the lefty lasted. The biggest blow came off the bat of Wandy--as unlikely as that sounds. With the bases loaded in a scoreless game, Rodriguez took the first five pitches he saw and found himself with a full count. He fouled off four pitches before lacing a line drive into the right filed corner for a two run double. He scored moments later on a hit by Kaz Matsui. The four runs was more than enough.

Wandy had the Phils under his heel for the night and the Astros wound up with a 7-0 win! It was all topped off by a huge fireworks show sponsored by Marathon Oil. Very nice night at Minute Maid.

Miggy on Fire!

Miguel Tejada came into the game tonight with a .353 batting average, leading the National League in hitting. Then he was on 4 times tonight, including a game winning home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning. The Astros won the game 3-2 for a four game winning streak. That is a modest streak, but it is a step in the right direction.

Hard to Be Excited!

The Houston Astros are playing so poorly that it is hard to be excited about what the dog days of summer will bring for the team. Their history indicattes that they will not give up and just be washed away by the competition. But just a few days ago I was sitting in the stands watching a game that if they won would have put them only one game under .500 for the season. Roy O. was on the mound with a lead. Relievers could not hold down the Brewers and the offense could not score again, so the game was lost. Followed by a string of losses that has put the 'Stros in the cellar and not showing any signs of getting better. Yesterday they gave up eight unearned runs and lost 8-5 in Cincinnati on a day shen the team had 14 hits. Yuk!

Tejada on Probation

Miguel Tejada's immediate playing future was cleared up today when he received probation for having lied to Congress. He was liable for up to a year in jail and a $100,000 fine for his crime, but was given leniency because he plead guilty. He will also have to pay $5000 as his fine, but now he can get on with his preparations for the season without an ax hanging over his head. Let's hope that translates into a good season for him and the Astros!
